Nellore: Home to the island of India's spaceport Sriharikota, Nellore located in coastal Andhra region is one of the 13 districts of Andhra Pradesh. The population of the district according to the Census 2011 was 29,66,082. Nellore city is its administrative headquarters.

The district is bordered by the Bay of Bengal to the east, Kadapa district to the west, Prakasam District to the north, Chittoor district and Thiruvallur district of Tamil Nadu to the south.

Nellore district is known for producing the largest quantity of crude mica in India. Many notable personalities such as ex-AP CM Nedurumalli Janardhana Reddy, Vice-President of India M Venkaiah Naidu, founding member of CPI-M Puchalapalli Sundaraiah, actors Singeetam Srinivasa Rao, S. P. Balasubrahmanyam, among others are associated with the place.

Talking about problems in the district, drought continues to be an issue in the district along with problems faced by the fishermen community.

The district has one Parliamentary constituency and 10 Assembly segments. Former minister Adala Prabhakar Reddy from the ruling TDP who shifted to YSRCP has been an advantage for the YSRCP. The ruling TDP faced a jolt when Gudur strongman and former minister Balle Durga Prasad followed suit.

Nellore Lok Sabha Seat:

An earlier Congress bastion, the YSR Congress Party has gained prominence in the constituency now. Nellore constituency includes Nellore City, Nellore Rural, Kovur, Atmakur, Udayagiri, Kavali and Kandukur (Prakasam district) Assembly segments. Barring two, the YSRCP won all the seats in 2014.

In 2014, Mekapati Rajamohan Reddy, a former member of Congress, led YSRCP to victory. He defeated TDP's Adala Prabhakara Reddy by 13,478 votes.

Meanwhile, Adala Prabhakara Reddy has joined the YSRCP this time and has been named as the party's candidate.

According to the 2011 census, the constituency has a total population of 20,60,029 out of which 65.73% is rural and 34.27% is urban population. The Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) ratio is 19.23 and 7.87, respectively out of total population.

Nellore Lok Sabha Candidates for 2019:

  • YSRCP: Adala Prabhakara Reddy
  • TDP: Beedha Masthan Rao
  • Congress: Chevuru Devakumar Reddy

There are 10 Assembly Constituencies in the district.

  • Kavali: YSRCP's Ramireddy Pratap Kumar Reddy will fight it out with TDP's Vishnu Vardhan Reddy. The Jana Sena Candidate os Pasupuleti Sudhakar.
  • Nellore City: YSRCP candidate Anil Kumar Yadav Poluboina will battle it out against Ponguru Narayana of the TDP and Ketham Reddy Vinod Reddy of the Jana Sena.
  • Udayagiri: YSRCP's Chandra Sekhar Reddy Mekapati will contest against TDP's Bollineni Ramarao and Jana Sena's Guru Prasad Marella.
  • Kovur: The fight is between YSRCP candidate Nallapareddy Prasanna Kumar Reddy vs TDP's Polamreddy Srinivasulu Reddy vs T Raghavayya of the Jana Sena.
  • Nellore Rural: Kotamreddy Sridhar Reddy of the YSRCP will be pitted against TDP's Abdul Azeez and Jana Sena's Channa Reddy Manukranth Reddy
  • Atmakur: YSRCP's Mekapati Goutham Reddy will take on TDP's Bollineni Krishnaiah and Chinareddy of the Jana Sena.
  • Venkatagiri: YSRCP candidate Anam Ramanarayana Reddy will fight it out with K Ramakrishna of the TDP.
  • Guduru (SC): YRSCP candidate Varaprasad will face off Pasam Suneel of the TDP.
  • Sarvepalli: YSRC candidate Kakani Govardhan Reddy will contest against Somireddy Chandramohan Reddy of the TDP.
  • Sullurpeta (SC): YSRCP's Sanjeevaiah Kiliveti will battle it out against TDP's Pasa Venkata Ratnam from this segment.

Andhra Pradesh is gearing up for simultaneous Assembly and Parliamentary elections to be held in a single phase on April 11. Counting will take place on May 23. The campaign for the polls comes to an end on Tuesday.
