More Women In Electoral Fray As Dummy Candidates

The number of women contesting in elections is increasing every election, but the sad part is that they are seen as puppet candidates.

It is learnt that senior leaders from the party are fielding women candidates, in case their nomination gets rejected. There are others like Jaleel Khan, who fielded his daughter Shabhana Khatoon from Vijayawada West constituency.

For instance, Bode Prasad from TDP, Vallabhaneni Vamsi Mohan from TDP, Bandi Rama Krishna from Jana Sena and Prapulla Srikanth Annepaga from BJP made their wives or daughters to file nomination papers.

From Lok Sabha constituencies Galla Jayadev from TDP, Kesineni Srinivas(Nani) from TDP made their spouses to file the nomination. This fielding of puppet candidates is not illegal and practised by political families to hold the seat within the family.

In the last general election, a total of 179 women candidates contested of which only a few secured the victory.

Among the trend-setters of making sure that the reins of power stayed in the family, was RJD strongman, Lalu Yadav, former chief minister of Bihar and former Union Railway minister.

After an arrest warrant was issued against him for his involvement in the fodder scam, Lalu ensured that his wife, Rabri Devi, a simple housewife became chief minister. He could thus control the levers of power, even while he was ousted from chief ministership.
