March 31 Ramadan Holiday cancelled in Haryana

27 Mar, 2025 12:27 IST

In a shock decision, the Haryana government has cancelled the Eid holiday in the state this year. The reason for this cancellation, as per a letter released by Chief Secretary Haryana Anurag Rastogi, is the closure of the financial year 2024-25.

March 31, 2025, is the financial year-end date, and the government wishes to make sure that all the financial transactions are settled without any problems. March 29 and 30 are off days during weekends, so the government has decided to mark Eid-ul-Fitr as a restricted holiday rather than a gazetted holiday.

This choice might be disappointing to most, but it is important to ensure continuity in government services, particularly at the end of the financial year. The Haryana government's action is intended to enable a smooth transition into the new financial year.

Interestingly, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has also directed banks to open on March 31, 2025, to handle government transactions.² This indicates that although the Eid holiday has been suspended, important banking services will continue to be available.

The Haryana government's move may have been inconvenient, but it's a necessary measure to make sure that the financial machinery of the state continues to function well.
