Hyderabad Metro: Skywalks Connecting Metro Stations and Commercial Hubs

Hyderabad Metro Rail authorities have decided to encourage the construction of skywalks (overpasses) linking metro stations to nearby commercial and residential complexes. This initiative, discussed at the recent Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP) meeting, aims to strengthen the public transport system, reduce traffic congestion, and lower air pollution in the city.

The city already has several successful skywalks. At Uppal Junction, the metro station is connected to a skywalk that links to multiple bus stops. Additionally, skywalks have been built connecting the JBS (Jubilee Bus Station) and Parade Ground metro stations, allowing passengers to avoid crossing busy roads. Raheja Group has also constructed a sophisticated skywalk with various amenities, providing easy access to international offices in the 11 towers of the Raheja Mind Space Complex from Raidurg Metro Station.

During the CMP meeting held at the Swarnajayanti Complex in HMDA, officials, including Metro MD NVS Reddy and Commissioner Sarfaraz Ahmed, agreed to offer private companies opportunities to construct skywalks linking metro stations to nearby facilities. One such project under consideration is an 800-meter skywalk connecting Secunderabad Metro Station to the Secunderabad Railway Station and the Secunderabad West Metro Station. This project aims to enhance connectivity and promote the use of public transport while reducing the reliance on private vehicles. The skywalk will be built under the guidance of HMDA or GHMC, with construction expected to begin soon.

Private companies are also getting involved. Skywalks from metro stations to malls developed by L&T have already been constructed at Punjagutta, Hitech City, and Erramanzil stations, providing easy access to commercial complexes. L&T is also building a skywalk from Dr. Ambedkar Balanagar Metro Station to the nearby Phoenix Landmark Mall. Similarly, the Vasavi Group is constructing a skywalk from LB Nagar Metro Station to the Vasavi Anandanilayam residential complex. Talks are also underway with L&T to construct additional skywalks at stations like Nagole, Durgam Cheruvu, and Kukatpally.
