Union Minister confirms 25,000 kg consignment seized at Vizag Port contained inactive dried yeast

Says closure report was submitted and accepted by a competent court in Sept 2024

Putting an end to the controversy surrounding the alleged seizure of 25,000 kg of drugs at the Visakhapatnam airport, Minister of State in the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances, and Pensions of India, Jitendra Singh, clarified that the seized consignment was inactive dried yeast.

In a written reply to a question raised by Rajya Sabha MP and YSRCP leader YV Subba Reddy, the Union Minister stated that the CBI had seized 25,000 kg of inactive dried yeast, which had been mistakenly suspected to be narcotics, at the Visakhapatnam Port on March 19, 2024. He explained that the consignment had arrived from Santos Port in Brazil, and the CBI registered a case on March 20, 2024. Samples sent to the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) in New Delhi tested negative for any narcotic or psychotropic substances.

Singh further revealed that a case closure report was filed before the competent court on July 23, 2024, and was accepted on September 21, 2024.

The Union Minister's response to Subba Reddy's question has once again exposed the propaganda politics of TDP supremo and Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu. It is important to note that the consignment was seized just before the election, during the previous YSRCP regime.

At the time, Opposition Leader Naidu had alleged the involvement of the ruling party in the issue. In a post on X, he had said, "This confirms my fear that Andhra Pradesh has turned into the drug capital of India over the last five years, and the future of our youth is at serious risk. It is time that the people responsible for this menace are caught and punished."

In his question, Subba Reddy had inquired whether the CBI had seized 25,000 kg of cocaine at the Visakhapatnam port in March 2024. If so, he sought details of the seizure, including its origin and the criminal network involved. He also requested information on whether the CBI had filed an FIR and the current status of the case.
