Jagan banks on the poor and needy

With the final day of the Assembly and Lok Sabha elections approaching, political parties from Andhra Pradesh, namely YSRCP headed by Jagan Mohan Reddy and the opposition party alliance Telugu Desam-Jana Sena, are introducing various women-centric schemes. However, it is YSRCP which already doled out several welfare schemes for women and poor that has a clear edge over its rivals.

The ruling party, led by Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy, has always focused on women and gained their support. YSRCP has provided 24 women-centred schemes, which have offered financial aid of up to 2.83 lakh crores, both DBT and Non-DBT, in the last 5 years of their reign. This was reciprocated by 2,10,56,137 out of a total of 4.14 crore voters in AP, who were women. They have been a dominant force, occupying 60 out of 175 assembly constituencies, including popular areas like Bheemili, Gajuvaka, Mangalagiri, Vizag North and East, Vijayawada West and Central, Guntur West, Tenali, Kakinada city, Bhimavaram, Kadapa, Nandyal, etc.

The flagship and women-focused Direct Benefit Transfer welfare schemes offered by the YSRC government are Jagananna Amma Vodi, YSR 'Sunna' Vaddi (SHGs), YSR Pension Kanuka, YSR Cheyutha, YSR Aasara, YSR Kapu Nestam, YSR Netanna Nestam, Jagananna Chedodu, Jagananna Vasati Deevena, Jagananna Vidya Deevena, YSR Rythu Bharosa, YSR Sunna Vaddi Panta Runalu (farmers), input subsidy to farmers, YSR Vahana Mitra, YSR Aarogya Aasara, YSR EBC Nestham, YSR AarogyaSri, YSR Kalyanamasthu/Shadika Thofa, and Housing payments (directly to the beneficiaries). Additionally, the government provided them with house construction and Non-DBT welfare initiatives, including Jagananna Vidya Kanuka, YSR Sampoorna Poshana, and Jagananna Gorumudda.

Regarding YSR Aasara, 1,94,169 beneficiaries received Rs 25,570 crore; concerning YSR Jagananna Amma Vodi, 44,48,865 beneficiaries received Rs 26,067 crore; regarding YSR Cheyutha, 26,98,931 beneficiaries received Rs 19,189 crore; and concerning YSR Sunna Vaddi (SHG), 1,05,13,365 beneficiaries received Rs 4,969 crore, excluding housing sites. Up to 31,19,00 recipients were given home sites valued at Rs 77,975 crore. The Chief Minister enhanced the other welfare packages in the Navaratnalu Plus manifesto and raised Amma Vodi's payment to Rs 17,000. The party leaders asserted that this gives even more power to women. YS Jagan has set his focus on his party's poll manifesto.
